Michigan Announces Plan to Bolster State’s Dam Safety

Michigan’s Department of Natural Resources has announced a new Dam Management Grant Program to address the state’s failing dam infrastructure. The grant will provide US$2.35 million in the 2013 fiscal year to fund dam removal and maintenance, as per a 2011 address by Michigan Governor Rick Snyder.

 

Tribe Objects to Chemical Tests on Klamath River

Tribes with territory along the Klamath River are not happy about a Sept. 6, 2012, PacifiCorp test of the algaecide GreenClean on water in the Copco Reservoir during the traditional world renewal ceremonies. Regina Chichizola, the communication coordinator for the Hoopa Valley Tribe, said that the tribe was not notified about the test.

 

Bishopville Dam Repairs in Final Stage

BISHOPVILLE — Long-awaited repairs to the Bishopville Dam are going to start soon, giving spawning saltwater fish a better opportunity to swim upstream into fresh water, and making the St. Martin River a cleaner waterway.

 

Beaver Lake Dam Removal to Begin this Month

DERRY — Work on the removal of the Beaver Lake Dam could begin as early as next week. Whereas proposals to have the town take control of the Adams Pond Dam has garnered some disagreement among citizens, the plan to do away with the Beaver Lake Dam has been a much more low-key affair.

I’ve caught some big trout in that section of the Boardman River below Brown Bridge Dam. It was a beautiful place to wet a line knowing that you were fishing some of the same water that Len Halladay and Charles Adams once prowled. The Fifth Avenue dam met the wrecking ball this summer. Its Downtown sister at Main Street will be next in 2014. The April announcement of the $35.5 million project led by nonprofit Columbus Downtown Development Corp (CDDC) is supposed to beautify the area with 33 new acres of green space, but the dam removal has some critics. Both sides agree it’s a city-changing plan, but part ways on the outcome.

Dam Breach Causes Emergency

The breach of a dam south of Traverse City over the weekend gave residents along the Boardman River a scare. Officials declared a state of emergency for several hours and issued evacuation orders. Floodwaters damaged a number of homes in low spots along the river but there were no injuries.

 

Blasting Continues to Bring Down Glines Canyon Dam

OLYMPIC NATIONAL PARK — The big mud puddle behind what’s left of Glines Canyon Dam is about to get a lot smaller. Crews will resume blasting the 85-year-old dam Monday, lowering what’s left of Lake Mills by another 8 feet.
